If your in children’s ministry, I hope that you take the time to pray for the kids in your ministry. If you have larger numbers you may need to oversee a team of people who are routinely praying for the kids in the ministry. This is an area we are growing in and the following post is what I am sending to my team and the parents of our kids. We are being intentional to pray for the kids who are nearing 6th grade and have not made a profession of faith. Here is how we are praying.
1. Pray that the Spirit of God will draw them.
In John 6:44 Jesus, said this:
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
There is always a drawing of the Holy Spirit on our heart for salvation. Often we see evidence of this drawing when kids begin to ask questions about salvation. It’s not always just a head knowledge, but it is God drawing their hearts to His. So begin with asking God to draw their hearts to His.
Father I pray you will begin to draw his/her heart to yours. Help them to hear your voice and feel your presence.
2. Pray that God will help them recognize their sin.
Once God begins to draw someone’s heart to His, they must then recognize that they are a sinner. We can teach them about the sins of the world, the sin of lying, stealing, selfishness etc, and we should but more importantly Jesus said this, as recorded in Matthew 22:38-39
“And He said to him, “‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment.”
Even on our best day, we are unable to keep this commandment, and because of this, we are hopeless in our own strength. So pray that God will enlighten them and help them understand that we are all hopeless sinners and unable to save ourselves. This can be difficult for a young person to understand and then articulate back to someone, but it is God who causes us to understand this, no matter the age or maturity level.
Father, I pray that you would help this child understand they are a hopeless sinner and unable to save themselves. Help them to understand that we rely solely on your grace and mercy.
3. Pray that God will help them to have faith in Him.
In order for anyone to be saved they must have FAITH. Faith that God is who He says He is and that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Faith that God raised Him from the dead on the third day and faith that Jesus is at the right hand of God and alive forevermore. We put our FAITH in Jesus Christ and Him alone. Faith that He paid our sin debt and when our faith becomes real, it is that faith which results in salvation. Jesus said we must have a child-like faith. That means we simply believe.
Father, I pray that _________ will have faith in you. Help him/her to recognize that faith and be able to put that faith into action.
I want to encourage you to share this post with the parents of the children who attend your church. I believe that God hears our prayers and will move Heaven and earth in response to those prayers. What a joy it will be when a young person comes to faith in Jesus Christ and to know that a team of people have been praying for them.
